In the Winter semester of the 1999-2000
academic year, the MU Office of Service-Learning and the Governmental
Affairs Office inaugurated a multidisciplinary Civic Leaders Internship
Project, supporting 45 state government internships for sophomores,
juniors, and seniors from across campus.

                Studies major, conducts research.</font>

conducts research for the Minority Floor Leader.</font>

<font>Ross Branson, a junior Political Science major,
interning in the office of Senator Chuck Gross.</font>

Since then, more than 300
students from nearly all disciplines on the MU campus have enrolled
in full- or part-time internships in government offices, agencies,
and the state legislature. Full-time interns receive up to $1,500
stipends to support their internships and defray expenses. Through
the Civic Leaders Internship Program, we:

Create opportunities for undergraduates to participate in state
                government internships for academic credit.

Provide a sound academic foundation for state leadership internships.
Interns are placed in positions that are related to their majors,
reflect their future graduate school or professional interests,
                and respect students as learners.

Encourage a sense of civic responsibility and a commitment to
civic leadership in undergraduates across disciplines. By exposing
students to civic leadership in positive and well-supported learning
environments, we hope to encourage a commitment to leadership
and civic engagement as a life-long enterprise.

Support participation of faculty as mentors and advisors of
                undergraduate interns.

Each year, students pursue internship opportunities in state government
agencies and departments such as Agriculture, Social Services, Natural
              Resources, Economic Development and Public Health, and Senior Services;
statewide offices such as the Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General,
Secretary of State, and Treasurer; state legislative offices including
senators and representatives; and legislative support offices such
as Communications. These sites have provided positive learning environments
and encouraged our students to truly contribute to the State of
Missouri. At the same time, internship sites have applauded the
enthusiasm, professionalism, and dedication of MU interns. Both
interns and the Missouri State Government have reaped the benefits
of a partnership of academics and public service.

"State Government and Leadership" is a course offered through the Honors College (though you do not have to be in the Honors College to take it), and is usually taken in conjunction with a CLIP internship.

Traditonally, the class has taken place in the Capitol in Jefferson City on Thursday afternoons from 1:00-3:15. The course provides an overview of the state legislature, the state government, and how they interact with a wide variety of actors: lobbyists, the press, the public, and so on. In seminar-style, the class will include guest speakers and professors to speak each week about different topics. As such, class questions and discussion are essential to the quality of each students' learning and the ultimate success of the class as a whole.

Since its inception in 1999, CLIP has
placed more than 300 students in various offices throughout the
state, including the State Capitol. We accept sophomores, juniors
and seniors from all academic disciplines.

To be placed in an internship, students undergo an application
and interview process, as well as a mandatory orientation that includes
what to expect at their internship sites, confidentiality and professional
conduct, and how to fulfill the internship credit requirements.

One of the more unusual aspects of MU's Civic Leaders Internship
Program is the amount of support the office also provides to internship
sites. Before placing a student at a site, the internship coordinator
makes every effort to meet with the supervisor to discuss the duties
that an intern would carry out, the number of days and hours the
intern should expect to work, and any other qualifications the intern
should have. In this way, both the student and the internship site
can be assured of a match that satisfies both of them.

After the matching process, students are required
to meet with their supervisors before starting the internship to
ensure that the match is acceptable and to discuss such subjects
as a starting date and working hours.

CLIP strives to place students where they will not only be useful
to the office where they intern, but also where they are respected
as learners. Our best internship sites involve students in a variety
of duties, give them increased responsibility as they deserve it,
and are engaged directly by the elected or other official for whom
              they work.

CLIP works to support students as they are interning, as well
as internship sites, if they have any questions or concerns. To
that end, the internship coordinator visits each site at least once
per semester or internship period (twice for legislative sites),
and evaluations are sent out twice each semester. The site supervisor's
final evaluation grade for each student counts toward a portion
of the student's final academic grade for the internship.

<font>"It's incredible - you will learn about yourself and your abilities, as you understand the function and structure of government. And, you'll restore your faith in government…maybe this internship will show you that you could possibly have a career as a public servant/leader!" ~ Former CLIP Intern </font>

Most CLIP students intern during the Winter semester, when the Missouri Legislature is in session. Internship sites directly related to the Legislature are only available during the Winter semester.

Although the State Legislature is not in session during the summer and fall semesters, some internship sites are available year-round. In addition, students planning to intern in Washington, D.C. may apply for CLIP academic credit.

<font>Chris Hessenflow, a senior Sociology
major, works on a case for the Columbia Police Department.</font>

Through the years, the Civic Leaders Internship Program has cultivated many interesting and worthwhile internship sites. Our best internship sites involve students in a variety of duties, give them increased responsibility as they deserve it, and are engaged directly by the supervisor or elected official for whom they work.
